How can yoga reduce stress?

In pranayama, a person breathes in a specific way. For example, breathe in for three counts, hold for four and breathe out for three counts.

Asanas will help improve the blood circulation throughout the body. Some asanas actually help massage the internal organs and stimulate them. Postures like the inverted pose, change the blood flow pattern temporarily, thereby flushing muscle tissues of their cumulated toxins. This physical effect helps a lot in relaxing your body. At the end of a yoga practice, it is normal to perform Shavasana; the corpse pose. When performing this pose, a person is encouraged to sense the whole of his body, from the tip of the toes to the head. This kind of awareness works wonders in releasing tense muscles.

Pranayama brings control to your breathing. In our busy daily life, many people fall into the habit of involuntary shallow breathing. Through pranayama, you get a chance to consciously change the habit of shallow breathing. A deep breath is not only relaxing but also necessary for your body to get optimum oxygen into the lungs. The structured breathing exercises help your body get rid of the shallow breathing habit over time.
